Definition: a social and economic order that encourages the purchase of goods and services in ever-greater amounts.
A few artists who explore the theme of consumerism that I found are Clay Butler and Barbara Kruger.
I would like to concentrate on how consumerism influences art.
The production system of our century is concentrated on producing the most stuff possible when art is about making „producing“ something that has a meaning behind it. In our society more stuff is available to more people which can’t really be considered bad but how does that concern art?
The problem of today’s society is that we don’t value stuff enough.
“Are these things really better than the things I already have? Or am I just trained to be dissatisfied with what I have now?”
― Chuck Palahniuk, Lullaby
We have lost the appreciation for things because of the great amount of them that we have. Like children who feel attached to their favourite toy, we’ve lost our ability to „connect“ with our possessions.
“What the mass media offers is not popular art, but entertainment which is intended to be consumed like food, forgotten, and replaced by a new dish.”
― W.H. Auden, The Dyer’s Hand
